It is difficult to become fluent in English without going to study in an English-speaking country. Of course, if you are dedicated, it is possible to make significant improvements in your language skills anywhere and, here in Japan, you are fortunate in having innumerable opportunities to study English but, compared to studying abroad, you also have several disadvantages.

Firstly, in Japan, most or all of the other members of your class are Japanese, so it is only natural that some Japanese is used during lessons. In addition, as soon as you walk out of a class in Japan, you are back in a Japanese environment, surrounded by Japanese signs and announcements and so on. You might not even encounter or use English again until your next lesson. On the other hand, in overseas schools, classes are usually composed of students of many different nationalities who use English as a common language both inside and outside the classroom. Also, upon leaving the classroom, you step out into a foreign environment where you need to use English in order to survive. In fact, you may use more English outside classes than in them, for socializing, shopping, traveling around, and so on.

Another difference between studying in your home country and studying abroad is related to the number of lessons you have. Generally, in Japan, you only have a few English lessons in a week, so it is easy to forget what you have learned. In contrast, schools in English-speaking countries usually offer intensive courses of 20 or more lessons per week to ensure rapid progress.

Thus, if you are serious about learning English, you should consider going abroad to study, even for a month. Of course, the longer you stay, the better your ability will become, so if you stay for a year, the advancement you make should be very noticeable. If you take a TOEIC test (or other test) immediately after returning home, you should achieve a higher score and that will probably help you in gaining employment. Your investment of time, money and effort could pay back big dividends in that respect.

As well as linguistic development, there are other benefits to be gained from studying abroad. Not only can you make friends with native English speakers, but your new circle of friends will include classmates from other countries. In addition, you will become more independent, flexible and broad-minded. Many people find that it changes their lives completely.

英語を話す国に勉強しに行かないで、英語が流暢に話せるようになることはとても難しいものです。もちろん、もしあなたが熱心な学生であれば、どこであろうとも英語の能力においてかなりの進歩をすることも可能ですし、また、ここ日本においては、英語を学ぶ数多くの機会をもっている点で確かにあなたは幸運ですが、海外で勉強するのと比べると、いくつかの不利な点をもっています。

まず第一に、日本では、あなたのクラスのほとんどまたはすべてのメンバーは日本人であることです。だから、授業中にいくらかの日本語が用いられるのも当然のことです。さらに、日本ではクラスから外に出るとすぐに、日本語の看板や通知などに取り囲まれた日本語の環境に戻ってしまいます。あなたは次の授業まで英語を使ったり、出くわしたりさえしないでしょう。（だからこそ宿題がとても大切なのですよ）。これに対して、海外の学校では、多くの国籍をもつ学生たちからクラスが構成されていて、クラスの中でも外でもどちらでも、共通語として英語を使います。また、クラスを離れるとすぐに、生き抜くために英語を使わなければならないような外国の環境へと歩き出ていくことになります。そしてそれはもっと一生懸命に勉強しようとする大きな動機となります。実際、あなた方は遊んだり、買い物をしたり、旅行をして回ったりなどクラスの中にいるよりもクラスの外でより多く英語を使うでしょう。

自分の国で勉強するのと海外で勉強するのとのもう一つの違いは、あなたが受ける授業の回数に関係しています。一般に、日本で英語を学ぶ時には、一週間に数回の授業だけしかなく、これは学んだことをすぐ忘れてしまいやすいことを意味しています。対照的に、英語を話す国の学校では、普通、急速な進歩を確保するために、一週に20回またはそれ以上のレッスンの集中コースを提供しています。

このように、もしあなたが英語を学ぶことに真剣であれば、たとえそれが一ヵ月であっても、勉強するために海外へ行くことを本当に考えるべきです。もちろん、長く滞在すればするほど、あなたの英語能力はずっと良くなるでしょう。だから、もしあなたが一年間滞在する余裕があるなら、あなたが果たす進歩は、実に驚くほどのものになるでしょう。日本に帰って来てすぐに、TOEIC（または他の英語テスト）を受けたら、あなたはきっと高い得点を得るでしょうし、そのことが仕事を得るのにきっと役に立つでしょう。あなたの投資した時間、お金、努力は、そういう意味で大きな利益をもたらしてくれるでしょう。

言語的発達と同様に、海外での一定期間にわたる勉強から得られるものは他にもあります。ネイティブの英語話者と友達になるチャンスを得るだけでなく、あなたの親しい友達の輪は、他の国からやってきたクラスメートもまたあなたの新しい友達の輪に含むことになるでしょう。くわえて、海外に住むことは、あなたを成熟させ、そして独立心に富み、柔軟で、広い心をもつようにしてくれるでしょう。多くの人々が、その体験が彼女や彼らの人生を完全に変えてしまうことに気づくのです。
